Description: "How light and slender can a chair be and still maintain its strength?" That was the question at the center of creating the 20-06 Chair, which was designed by Foster & Partners for the Smithsonian expansion in Washington, D.C., and built by Emeco. Foster & Partners' worldwide projects include the Hearst Headquarters in New York and 30 St. Mary Axe in London. The inventive geometry and ecological considerations they bring to architecture are also evident in the 20-06. Weighing five-and-a-half pounds, this handmade chair is crafted out of 80 recycled aluminum and has the tensile strength of 45,000 p.s.i. - three times stronger than steel. The hand-welded seamless construction is the result of a 77-step process developed in 1944 when Emeco first created its 1006 Navy¿ Chair for use on WWII submarines. The 20-06 is stackable up to 10 high and is suitable for outdoor use. The 20-06 Chair has an estimated 150-year lifespan; longevity that means less impact on the earth's resources. Contributes to LEED Certification Credit #4.2 Recycled Content. Made in U.S.A.
